Sticking with It: Homeschool Advice

The following post is from contributing writer Jen @ Forever, For Always, No Matter What

Sometimes when there are bumps in the road with our homeschool day, we can jump to the conclusion that the answer is to dump what we are doing and start over.  It’s so tempting to spend hours online researching for the perfect curriculum.  Been there, done that.  “Perfect” doesn’t exist!

Blogs, as wonderful as they are, are probably partly to blame for some malcontent.  Start clicking around a bit and you will find bloggers are raving about this or that perfect item.  It can make anyone feel restless.  Remember though, it probably is perfect for their family, it just might not work the same in yours.

Actually, that is one of the benefits of homeschooling, one size does not fit all. We can use and do what works in our home.  We know our family and ourselves best.   Sometimes that can be a downside too, there are just simply so many choices it can make a persons head spin.

While, there are times when we need to admit a particular curriculum or method isn’t working, more often the answer is to just have to stick with what we have.  Instead of spending hours looking for the perfect science curriculum, take a nature walk or a field trip to a zoo or animal conservatory.  Instead of searching for the perfect math curriculum, spend some time drilling math facts, or put the books away for a week or two.  Sometimes ideas need time to marinate before the light bulb goes off.

Let’s face it, the day in and day out of home education is tough.  Not only are we educating our children, but we have a household to maintain, people to feed and cloth.  Our to do lists rival that of any CEO!

Next time you feel like something isn’t working, take a deep breath, and take a step back.  Before you hop onto the computer ready to Google “what is the best _____”, give yourself a day or two to assess what might really be going on.  Taking a breather and then persevering might be just the ticket.
